A PERSONAL VIEW ON SPACE GEOTECHNICS

APPLYING EARTH-BASED SOLUTIONS

Roberto Moraes is a geologist and geotechnical engineer with over 30 years of international experience in tunneling, underground works, and rock mechanics across more than 15 countries. His expertise spans complex infrastructure projects on Earth, hydropower, transportation, mining, as well as emerging strategies for lunar site preparation and construction.

As the author of The Moon Builders, Roberto brings a grounded, execution-driven perspective to space infrastructure. He is an active contributor to LSIC (Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium) and serves on the ASCE Aerospace Division’s committee for off-Earth construction guidelines. His work bridges terrestrial geomechanics with the unique constraints of lunar engineering.

Through Space Geotech, Roberto shares insights and fosters global discussion on what it truly takes to prepare, excavate, and build on the Moon.
